Praised for their passionate performances and energetic stage presence, the Borealis String Quartet has become one of Canada’s most internationally recognized chamber ensembles. Founded in Vancouver in 2000, the quartet has performed extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia, appearing in cities including New York, Rome, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, and Toronto.

The ensemble has appeared on major concert series such as the Metropolitan Museum Beethoven Series in New York and has performed for audiences of more than 75,000 at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. In Vancouver, they were featured during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Known for combining traditional quartet repertoire with innovative programming, Borealis often brings together classical masterworks, folk influences, and contemporary music. Their performances are recognized for their intensity, communication with audiences, and visually engaging concert presentations.

The quartet has recorded seven albums featuring works by composers including Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Grieg, and Respighi, alongside music written specifically for the ensemble. They are also strong advocates for Canadian composers and have commissioned and premiered numerous new works.

Beyond the concert stage, Borealis is deeply committed to education and community engagement. They have presented extensive outreach concerts in schools and care facilities throughout British Columbia and have served as Quartet-in-Residence at institutions including the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and the Langley Community Music School.

The quartet performs on an exceptional collection of rare Italian instruments generously loaned by the CHIMEI Culture Foundation, one of the world’s leading private collections of fine string instruments. The ensemble’s instruments include a 1698 Giovanni Battista Rogeri violin, a Lorenzo Storioni violin from c.1780, a 1791 Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza viola, and a 1778 Lorenzo Storioni cello.
