The VCMS is proud to introduce the 'Young Artists Masterclass' program.

We are thrilled to announce this innovative platform designed to nurture and empower the next generation of musical talent.

With this program, we aim to provide aspiring young musicians with unique opportunities for growth and mentorship under the guidance of some of the most esteemed musicians in the world.

Stefan Jackiw

Stefan Jackiw is one of America’s foremost violinists, captivating audiences with playing that combines poetry and purity with impeccable technique. Hailed for playing of “uncommon musical substance” that is “striking for its intelligence and sensitivity” (Boston Globe), Jackiw has appeared as a soloist with the Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco symphony orchestras, among others.

Born to physicist parents of Korean and Ukrainian descent, Stefan Jackiw began playing the violin at the age of four. His teachers have included Zinaida Gilels, Michèle Auclair, and Donald Weilerstein. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory. He is the recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Jackiw plays a violin made in 1705 by Vincenzo Ruggieri. He lives in New York City.

*The application fee includes one general admission to the masterclass date. Additionally, all applicants will receive one complimentary ticket to attend Stefan Jackiw’s recital on March 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Vancouver Academy of Music’s Koerner Recital Hall.

INFORMATION

1. EVENT DETAILS

Date / Time: March 9, 2024 @ 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Location: Pacific Spirit United Church (2195 W 45th Ave, Vancouver, BC V6M 2J4)

Ticket: $10 for the general public

2. REQUIREMENTS

Age: Under 25

Recommended Skill Level: RCM Grade 8 / Suzuki Level 9 or equivalent minimum proficiency.

Video Submission Requirements: Please title your video with the student's name (First, Last), age, composer, and title. The named piece must be the piece presented at the masterclass. You may also submit a performance of an additional piece recorded within the last 6 months. Please submit at least one video recording showcasing 3-10 minutes of your playing.

2. Submit your application with payment. 

3. Notification of active participation admission will be emailed by March 5, 2023.

Confirmation of active participation will be announced by the 5th of March 2024 per email.

Please provide only links to YouTube videos.
 

Which/how many pieces are required for the masterclass selection?
Repertoire is a free choice. However, recordings submi
tted should demonstrate a high level of ability and must be unedited live videos. The quality of the recording device used is not a deciding factor.

About the video upload:
The videos can be uploaded to YouTube for free and set to "unlisted" (please do not set it to "private" because otherwise, the videos can only be seen by you). Thus, the videos are not publicly visible but only through the links that we get from you. Of course, you can also send links to public videos. In the application form, please enter the link to the videos.

3. PARTICIPATION AT MASTERCLASS

All selected participants are required to arrive on-site at least 10 minutes before the start of the masterclass. Additionally, each participant is responsible for arranging their accompanist.
