PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Spanning the worlds of Romantic lyricism, dramatic virtuosity, and jazz-inspired rhythm, this program explores the remarkable expressive range of chamber music through works by Robert Schumann, Carl Maria von Weber, and Nikolai Kapustin.
Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 opens the program with warmth, intimacy, and sweeping Romantic expression. Originally written during one of the composer’s most inspired creative periods, the work moves seamlessly between lyrical tenderness and passionate energy, revealing Schumann’s gift for deeply personal musical storytelling.
Weber’s Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 63 brings a more dramatic and theatrical voice to the stage. Known as one of the pioneers of early German Romanticism, Weber combines virtuosic brilliance with operatic flair, creating music filled with urgency, elegance, and vivid contrasts in colour and character.
The program concludes with Kapustin’s Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano, a work that blends classical form with the rhythmic energy and harmonic language of jazz. Unlike improvisational jazz, every note is fully written out, resulting in music that feels spontaneous, playful, and electrifying while demanding extraordinary precision from the performers.
Together, these works create a program rich in contrast and colour — moving from lyric Romanticism to fiery virtuosity and finally into the vibrant pulse of 20th-century jazz-inspired chamber music.
